Program note
The principle of contrast, the foundation of all sound dramaturgy, disappears as we reduce all registers to an extreme minimum. If sound moves within a range so limited that it allows no perceptible changes, then we are left to rethink the concept of form as a more open one — a structure that can contain any model of organization of the sound phenomenon, even if it completely lacks perceptible contrasts; even if, by doing so, it lacks dramatic development and thereby questions the very nature of artistic activity.
Brutal is an attempt to apply these considerations to a larger instrumental group. The monolithic block has no climax, no contrasts, no surprises, nor dramatic development. It is a perfectly predictable, unidirectional process, whose subtle internal modifications are only perceptible when comparing the extreme poles of the process—the starting point and the endpoint.
